I wish I could surf. At 42 with a family and a full-time job there’s a dwindling chance I’ll ever realize my dream to ride the waves. It’s okay, photography helps me find my center in ways that I imagine surfing does…photography’s just nowhere near as cool.
This surfer was braving gale-force winds just a few miles east of Paia on the island of Maui. My wife and I watched a talented group of surfers own these waves for nearly an hour. They were quite far from the beach so the shots at 300mm were a bit challenging in the wind and without a tripod. This is one of my favorites. The surfer is caught in a nice pose and the wave’s crest is pretty dramatically disrupted by the wind.

First of all, that’s a great capture.
Second, I am deathly afraid of the ocean, sharks, etc. However, I have enjoyed all of my attempts at surfing. It really is something you should try at least once.
Thanks Christine! Maybe I will try someday–I have to admit that sharks have crossed my mind once or twice.
What a ride! Oh Maui!

Thanks Michael–I’m very jealous of these athletes. All I can do is photograph them.
Looks wild and fun at the same time!
