I’ve developed a bit of photographic wanderlust. I want to try some new things and perhaps explore some new photographic territory. This post and the one before are babysteps into this exciting new territory…or abyss, depending on your perspective. Corinna over at Bird Wanna Whistle makes it a point to ask herself a simple question with each image: but what does it do? One of my favorite posts, Resolution, examines this question with the help of her godmother, Jewel. It’s a wonderful post that left me artistically smitten with Jewel.
Last night I came across a quote at the bookstore that made me think about Corinna’s query in a slightly different way.
One should not only photograph things for what they are but for what else they are. ~ Minor White
I’m not sure if White’s asking a different question than Corinna’s or if he’s giving us one very effective answer to it. With apologies to both artists I’m going with an amalgam of the two: what ELSE does it do? So that’s it really–I’m trying some new things and I’m more than a little nervous about it. What’s life though, if some of it isn’t spent feeling ruffled?
Here goes!

Exquisite – in its simplicity..its color..its beauty. And – yes – we’re always trying to look at things in different ways…finding what’s different and unique thru our camera’s lens. Keep on exploring…

Thanks so much Marcie–it’s been a challenge for me. I don’t think I’ve got those same creative neurons.
LOVE this photo. So beautiful in its color and lines. Also LOVE the quote from Minor White. I’m going to have to work to incorporate this line of thinking into my practice. Thanks for the shout-out. Can’t wait to see what more you come up with now that you’ve got those tubes!

Many thanks Andrey!
Excellent delicate touch, soft color, light, selective focus. Your image has a nice feel of movement too, with the receding shapes of the petals, like a ballet dance perhaps. Wonderful image Christopher!

Thanks Krunal!
Close-ups and macros show the complex and delicate make-up of so many things that we would usually disregard.
This photo is a case in point. The color, veining, and even the soft edge of the petal show well–and when would we really think about those things? Good work!
As for your experiment with your photography–Go For It. If it doesn’t work, you can always turn around. The “No Exit” sign doesn’t exist.
I appreciate your work, Chris.

Thank you very much Suke–really appreciate that!
I have to say, I love the slightly darker richer colours with the faded blue background, but that’s just me. I think it makes the petals pop better.

Thanks Alexandra–really appreciate your thoughts. For me the lighter, ethereal petals more effectively merge the image with my intention to show them as almost waves of purple light–ultraviolet waves if you will. But that’s just the science-geek that is me! Again, thanks!
This is so beautiful…a wonderful layering of light and colours.

Thank you Theys!
There’s a big, wide, wonderful, photographic world out there Chris. From vast landscapes to the almost hidden world of macro – it’s all worthy of investigation.
Gotta say though that I agree with Alexandra, the slightly darker background works better for me. too.

Appreciate your thoughts George–thanks.
I see a flying dancer whirling her sheer violet wings into waves that trace the outer reaches of her motion.
