The Long Way Home

To my wife’s annoyance, I’m frequently saying, “our time is valuable.” Often this comes up during extended periods of comparison shopping. At a certain point in the bargain-hunting I begin to feel that we’ve crossed a threshold wherein the time spent is greater in value than the monetary savings gained. I generally turn dramatically on my heel at this point, confident that I have her wriggling in the grasp of reason only to find after a few dozen strides that I’m walking alone.

There are occasions, however, when I’m glad to spend a little extra time. Each night after a long day at work I have two options for my drive home. One is to muscle my way onto arguably the busiest freeway in America and the other is to take a back road through largely undeveloped land. It’s not really even a question; almost every evening I take the long way home. I climb a small mountain, pass a nice lake and eventually descend a tortuous canyon road. Depending on the time of year, this might all be happening under a beautiful sunset such as this one taken last week.

With each passing mile and every new scene I feel the stresses and worries of the day stripped away one by one. Once home I untangle myself from the bear-hugs and begin the ritual of hearing about everyone’s day. My wife smiles and hands me a delicious Belgian ale…which she’s managed to get for 40% less than I paid for it a week ago.

Yes, it really does taste better.

A wonderful sunset, or in fact after-sunset, very well captured.

This is a really fine photo. Good work. I also enjoyed the real life account. I imagine a lot of people can identify with you. By the way, is that 40% cheaper ale a direct result of your wife’s comparison shopping? Just wondering? ;) Have a great weekend.

    Lovely sky!

Comparison shopping should only be allowed in “Borders” or similar!

Thanks George! That’s hilarious–you’re right, the more time she needs at a place like Borders the better! =]
