Mouseover to see the Original RAW
I’m a complete sucker for heroes. I get misty whenever I hear a good story of people being uncharacteristically kind to one another. Over the last week there have been countless stories from Japan of good people doing incredibly brave things to help others. One story has captivated me; for seven days a volunteer skeleton crew of engineers, scientists and emergency workers have been working round the clock to prevent a horrible disaster at the Fukushima nuclear power plant. These individuals have unquestionably put themselves in harm’s way and may very well have already received life-threatening doses of radiation during their struggle to keep the nuclear material cool and contained. How many of us, I wonder, would have raised our hands when they asked for volunteers to stay behind? Do I have in me the stuff of heroes? Do you?

Thank you so much Fabrizio! The scene was so beautiful–it didn’t need much help from me.
That story has moved me as well. Every day heroes, and there’s nothing ordinary about them.

So true Sara–thanks!
I miss clouds seeing clouds like this in the sky. Makes me excited for the warmer weather on the way. Your raw captures are pretty nice, but the added contrast makes this wonderful.
Those guys in Japan – I was blow away when I heard the lengths they’ll go for everyone’s benefit. Certainly puts my trivial “problems” at work in perspective. They’re real heroes.

Good question, Christopher. I’m not sure i would have this stuff of hero in me.
The sea, the sky, the bird: what are we doing to you mother nature?

Thanks PixeLuz
Great photograph as usual sir but this time you had a very thoughtful point too.
—
Thank you very much Ayesha!
What a stunning image. And – I think we’re all feeling pulled into heroic action in this time of crisis. But – like you – I’m just not sure I could…or – not that kind of heroism..y’know?

Thank you so much Marcie

Thank you so much Krunal!
Beautiful scenery, sky & pure nature… till when ?
As for your question, i’m sure of something : nobody knows how much or less he/she would act as a hero before facing the situation, and this is for all the situations in life, our mind can’t figure out how our nerves & muscles would react. And maybe you would be a hero, Chris. Kiss kiss & best thoughts with those who are facing tragedy & act so beautifully in Japan, and many other places.
—
Thank you very much k@–I hope you’re right. Best to you as well!
Beautiful sea and sky, as always, Chris. I hope I’ll never have to know if I have the stuff of a hero in my soul, but I’m sure the Japanese have something to teach us about civility and preparedness in all this tragedy.

So true Corinna–thank you very much!
Gorgeous light and composition.
To answer your last question: I think at this point in my life, the answer is yes.
—
Thank you so much Kala! That’s really fantastic–I hope I’ve got the same.
I wish that I could say that I’d be one of those to stay behind but if I’m honest, I can’t answer with an unequivocal YES. I can only hope that put in that situation, I would rise to the task.
Thank you giving us a STUNNING image to ponder such a large question. And for reminding us of all those heroes in Japan.

Thank you so much Diane!
Great photo, Chris. The processing really makes it one that stands out. As for your essay, we’ve seen some amazing, humbling, and inspiring things happen with the people of Japan amidst an almost incomprehensible tragedy. I’d like to think I would have the courage to step up like the workers at the nuclear plant. I suppose we wouldn’t know unless we were in the situation. It certainly causes me to take a deeper look inside.

Thanks very much Phil!
nice fabulous shot with great lights
well done

Many thanks Noel!
Reluctant heroes. Do they not put up for this work in Japan? Did they really have a choice? What were their emgagements before this disaster? Few people would take their place. It’s true …
—
I very much hope they were not coerced–I hope they are there of their own accord. Thanks Olivier!
That’s a wonderfully tranquil image that contrasts do well with the world mention in your words.
IMost people, seeing their loved ones and friends at risk would step forward with enthusiasm…

Indeed Klaus, we do–thank you very much!
stunning image, the deep blue sky is appealing so is the straight, unbelievably flat horizon.
