Sea Weary

I come from the Maritime Provinces of Eastern Canada.  Generation after generation of Maritimers made their living off of the sea and land.  Fishermen set sail over dangerous seas, farmers lived difficult lives with nearly endless days and loggers struggled to reach areas where no human foot had set.  Like the relentless force of the water against an eroding rock, time slowly changes everything.  Technology and modernization has worked it’s way into everyone’s lives and the Maritimes are no exception.  Massive support centers take advantage of an exceptional telecommunications infrastructure and the IT industry now provides countless jobs more stable and less dangerous than living off the land and sea.  Certainly there are those who still fish the sea and till the land; they are a vital force in the Maritimes but their struggle has only become more difficult.

On a recent trip home I came across this old abandoned fishing vessel on the coast of New Brunswick; I wondered what tales she could tell us.  Unfortunately she isn’t speaking; her day is over and a new day has arrived in this rugged stormy land.

Funny, for some reason I now have Billy Joel’s “Downeaster Alexa” stuck in my head.

Wonderful processing – I like the vignetting. We visited Nova Scotia many years back and I remember seeing and hearing about how difficult sailing the coast was/can be.

Chris. I love the photo of the boat. I was thinking about drawing it then I noticed the work on it, and realized it’s Bobby’s old boat. The boat got dragged out into the bay during one of our fall storms and sank. Even the fish shack next to the boat is now gone. We miss the old boat and your photo brings back wonderful memories. Love your photos. Wish you lived closer so we could do an exhibit for you. Keep up the great work.

Thanks so much Uncle Ladd! I love this old boat and I’m bummed to hear that she sank. I really wish I’d been more dedicated to my photography on all the trips I’ve taken to Saint Andrews. It’s a photographer’s heaven–beautiful place. Miss you guys!
