My daughter has amazing eyes. In a blink they can change from enchanting to contemptuous, from mirthful to wounded. She flits between these states in a way that I find dizzying and after four years I’m no closer to predicting where they will take us next. For Daddy, this can be a wild ride indeed. Perhaps most disconcerting is that she has figured out at the tender age of four the power she wields with them. Heaven help us all.
I took this picture at her preschool’s Spring Celebration. I took a few hours off work to join her for painting, playing games and hunting for painted eggs. Perhaps it was my presence but she seemed more reserved than usual so after finding all the eggs we wandered off together away from the overwhelming sea of moms and screaming kids. For the rest of the morning we played together at the sandbox and chatted about school, her friends and the structural integrity of sand castle turrets. I quickly snapped this picture as she surveyed her new queendom.
I processed this image to highlight her eye by converting to monochrome and then increasing exposure. I like how her features seem lighter and more delicate by the process but it’s her eye, once again, that really captures me.

Lovely high key portrait.
Thanks Kala!
Love this photo; can hardly wait each day to see what you will post next!
Thank you Katie-always appreciate your comments!
I do love this photo…very artistic but still “real”. The processing sounds complex but worthwhile not to wash out her delicate features. The overall light and play on the hair is beautiful
Thank you Mami.
Fantastic photography, Chris. Your writing under this one reminded me of Sting’s song “All Four Seasons In One Day”, about his young daughter’s ability to change moods at the drop of a hat.
Boy I really appreciate that Jamie! Thanks so much for checking my photoblog out.
Nice high key work. Evocative, catches the essence, and no more. Economy of mood.
Awesome, thanks!
