I grew up in Eastern Canada where the seasons come and go with authority; they are not for the faint of heart. This was a wonderful place to be a child. Is there anything better for a kid than building forts in the snow, splashing through puddles in springtime or jumping into a pile of leaves taller than you? Probably not. I love living in Southern California but I miss the seasons. Specifically, I miss the rain. It cleanses the earth and lightens my spirit. I miss it so much, in fact, when we plan our vacations I look for destinations that give me a chance of experiencing rain.
On one camping trip to the Central Coast of California we were delighted to have several days of rain. We meandered through the Santa Rita hills stopping every now and then for a taste of wine from a local vintner. My kids, you can imagine, loved this and made up any excuse to slip into their rubber boots for a good splashing. I followed them out and got this shot of my daughter examining the ripples her little pink boots made in the water. The shot reminded me of a similar one that my mom took of me as a child playing in the rain with my rubber boots and yellow slicker. In post, I tried to create a nostalgic polaroid look reminiscent of that shot my mom took 40 years ago.
