Mona Lisa Smile

One of my favorite pastimes is daydreaming about the future. I’ll often just sit and wonder about what lies ahead for my kids and what roads they’ll take to get there. Inherent in that is trying to figure out the best way to guide them. For me parenting is a maturation process as well; as the kids grow so do I. The twists and turns of raising children have changed me in ways that I must assume in turn changes them–the cycle of teaching, observing, learning, adjusting, teaching never seems to end.

This I think is the great gift they’ve given me. I don’t just affect them, they affect me. I focus so much of my attention on making sure they’re good, happy individuals and almost without noticing it they’ve made me a better, happier man. It is the great education of Daddy.

what a beautiful portrait – you must be very pride. by getting older I’m focused today mainly on the “now”, the only time we have to live. you will make probably the same expierence. when your kids are grown up..

Fatherhood seems to be a long road of testing and correcting with lots of joy along the way. If you really think about how important we are to our children you can really freak yourself out (at least I do). I always wonder if other guys feel the same as me, and this confirms that i’m not alone! As usual, lovely words Christopher.

Mike, it really is good to know that there are others out there that feel overwhelmed by the responsibility of fatherhood. I mean let’s face it, we’ll never do anything in life as important as this right? I’m starting to hyperventilate. Thanks for the thoughtful and encouraging comment Mike!

A lovely portrait and great sentiments in your writing. Regretfully those days are long gone, but happily the whole cycle is about to start again – for the somewhat older kids.

    Interesting days ahead!

Thanks so much George! My parents never cease to express how much fun they’re having as grandparents. As first-time grandparents I don’t think they anticipated the depth of attachment my kids have with them. They welcome it of course; it’s an extremely pleasant surprise. You’ll have a blast…an exhausting, dizzying blast!

Loved this image, the expression is priceless and the treatment to the picture is flawless, I feel. Interesting way to put it “I don’t just affect them, they affect me. “
