I’m so jealous of photographers that can consistently capture movement in their images. I’ve struggled with motion from the beginning. On many occasions I’ve set out for a day of shooting specifically to try to work on my movement-capturing skills. I prepare, I shoot, I review, I adjust, and I shoot again…over and over. Almost always I return home with a card full of images but an empty soul. There have been a few gems over the years but given how infrequent I have to believe they’re just dumb luck.
I took this picture on Maui at one of the nicer Luaus we’ve ever attended. The Feast at Lele is an atypical luau experience–you’re treated to personal seating facing the ocean and a prix fixe menu crafted by one of the Island’s best chefs…oh, and an open bar. Knowing that the feast would culminate in a fire dance I was ready and when the moment arrived I shot like a madman. I really like this shot though I had to wade through a bunch of stinkers before I found it. Still, I’m pleased with how the image adequately translates the kinesis into a still. I’m not sure why this one turned out when so many other attempts have failed.
It occurs to me, maybe the open bar had something to do with it.

Yes – a perfect capture indeed – like a dream, and I definately sense the motion. Sometimes things flow better when we’re not thinking as much!
I always think too much.
Thanks Mami!
Great capture – I shoot things that don’t move so I don’t worry too much about timing!
Excellent shot !!
Thank you!
You did it! I struggle with motion to and only get happy accidents. When darkness falls, I have to remember to use a tripod or something to steady the camera or that works against you too. See my link for a fire dance picture I took.
Thanks Ken! Headed over right now to check it out.
Hey, it’s not about the pictures you throw away, it’s about the ones you show.
Pretty sweet ring of fire. Very satisfying to look at. Good isolation of the subject.
Thanks Will!
