Fade To Blue

I suffer from severe feelings of inferiority every time I consider the men and women throughout history who have spent much of their lives on the sea. Some 40,000-60,000 years ago humans much braver than me took to the seas for the first time and successfully crossed the straits between the Asian continent and what is now New Guinea and Australia. They had boats made of who knows what and they set out before any other human being to explore by sea and settle new land; I get a little weak in the knees traversing Balboa harbor on the ferry.

I sometimes wonder what led them to take what must have been considered a crazy leap by many. Were they looking for new sources of food? Did they escape war by venturing across the sea? Were they fleeing a great pestilence? Or is it possible that one day they simply stared across the water, saw the faintest outline of an undiscovered land and knew in their hearts that they could never really rest until they explored it. Whatever the case they did what no one else had ever done and perhaps planted a seed that would grow into a defining human trait–the insatiable need to explore.

cool star effect on the sun!

Thanks yz–I think the refraction effect from the lens was enhanced by the sun shining through a small opening in the pier.

Hi Christopher, I enjoy having the feeling of watching the sun set behind this pier while gazing out past it to the sea beyond. And your thoughts make me wonder about all the known and unknown adventures of mankind on the high seas. Wonderfully thought provoking image!

Yup, a deep feel to go & explore, unhappily rarely in respect since some destroy a lot and turn themselves in big chiefs & new owners of virgin lands ignoring the true former owners already here but that is another (human, i guess) story ;) I love bridges : that fab construction made to make a link possible. Superb under that light.

So true–there is a very real dark side of human exploration…sad but true. Thanks k@!

With a view like that, I think I would be tempted to sit on the beach and watch the sun set. Beautiful colors and love the sun flare!

Une photo qui laisse rêveur…Une ambiance californiennes que l’on retrouve parfois dans les films. Des couleurs chaleureuses et un belle maitrise de la lumière sur le couché de soleil. Magnifique.

Such a lovely peaceful shot – it would make you wonder why anyone would want to leave…but I guess the other man’s (ooops I should say person’s) grass is always perceived to be greener.

Chris this particular composition isn’t really gripping the eye. And the image is a bit flat tonally.

    • Posted February 14, 2011 at 6:37 pm by admin | Permalink

Really appreciate the criticism Sumedh. I agonized over this shot (just ask my poor wife) and I agree it’s definitely not my best.
