Constitutional

Fellow photoblogger and kindred spirt Michael and I have, on several occasions, discussed the virtues of breaking from work to walk and photograph. These constitutionals are healing and invigorating interludes in the middle of a stressful workday. Michael works in an urban setting and I work in the burbs thousands of miles away so while the images are different I’m confident the feeling is similar. For a few short minutes all that I think about is, well, nothing; I just shoot and that may be where the real benefit lies. I got out once this week and spent my 30 minute lunch walking around a small pond near the office. It’s a frequent stop since I can reach it in 7 minutes, shoot for 15 and get back to work with a minute or two to spare. There was a a good breeze on this particular day and it created mesmerizing patterns of light on the water. The surface was ever-changing and though not still, it was calming. Now if I could just find some way to convert the turbulence of work and life into the same kind of calm…that would be a cool trick.

Christopher – as I follow your blog I did see this post a few days ago but didn’t have time to comment. It is such a beautiful abstract, love the contrast and the calming feel it gives the viewer. I can imagine it as a wonderful piece of art hanging on the wall. thanks for the comments on my blog. very much appreciated. have a great weekend!

Amazing shot, I love the transition from light to dark along the water. Great eye way to go capturing it.

Still, calm waters is soothing and serene, and I see all my photographic walks out as being a way of calming myself, my thoughts and rejuvenating my spirit.

Totally cool Christopher! It almost has the mysterious look of noctilucent clouds in a black and white sky. Interestingly, Sam Abell talked about his best photography being made in an unconscious state of mind.

I’m going to bookmark this, break out the headphones and just stare at this photo for quiet moments of peace throughout my day. Great shot Chris. I’ve been slacking on my lunchtime walks and shooting, but this is inspiration enough to continue! (And thanks for the shout out!)

Yes – there is something incredibly calm and centering about slowing down and capturing the world thru your camera’s lens. Stunning abstract. The b&w processing makes it magical!

A hypnotic photo. Maybe the order of the waves reminds us that there are always the high and low points and they flow and travel together.
I do think we can and should inject a little healing peace into our turbulences when we can. It takes a little effort and focus, but it is it’s own reward. Nicely done, Chris.

You and Michael with the walks! I MUST try this, even though it seems so unlikely, in the suburban blandness of my office setting, that I could generate anything this beautiful or soothing. Nicely done.

A reminder that peace is always just a short (very short) distance away. Beautiful, soothing b/w tones.
