Mouseover to see the Original RAW
A few days ago I visited a quirky corner of America. A few miles from my home and carved out of the sprawling Los Angeles metropolitan area is a place time forgot…almost. I met this cowboy trotting down the sidewalk in Norco (Horsetown USA). Sidewalks in Norco are actually broad horse paths complete with regularly spaced hitching posts and less regularly spaced horse hockey pucks. To activate the crossing light there are two buttons: one at human height and another much higher button for those on horseback. The QuickieMart has corral to hold the horses while shoppers grab what they need. This friendly cowboy for instance popped in for a tall one which he’s covertly hidden in a discreet paper bag. Not exactly the frontier but maybe the closest we can get in America these days.
I love quirky. When I met my wife I was delighted to find that no matter where she was or what she was doing she wore deliriously colorful socks. She said they made her feel happy amidst the stress of residency. I love that my daughter’s favorite outfit is a pink and purple tutu worn over zebra print leggings and a bright pink top with the word “Love” emblazoned across it in sequins. I love that my son has a collection of nearly a thousand seeds and pits. For what reason we’re not sure but no matter, I love that he has them. I love that I can walk down a street several miles from my home and have a nice conversation with a genuine cowboy and then watch him ride off into the suburbs.

Sorry to change up things a bit. WordPress updated to 3.1 and that seems to have broken my lightbox plugin and viewer for my original RAW. I’ve tried a new approach here; simply run your mouse over the image to see the original RAW.
Cheers!

I really like this option to view the original RAW file. Much of what moves us in an image is due to processing and you’ve got a knack for great warm tones in your black and white images. The processing really makes this image pop. Great shot!

Thanks very much Michael. So far a few find it distracting but it seems most are in favor so I think I’ll keep it up for the time being. Appreciate the feedback on the feature and the post!
Awesome shot! I love the muted colors that emphasize the horse. Well done!

Many thanks Nathan!
I like the new option. Look forward to seeing more.

Thank you Daniel–really appreciate the feedback!
technically, proportion and focus are in perfect equilibrium and the attention is in the totality, also in this lovely background.
Is really a pleasant vision in this sepia soft shade, compliments Chris

Thank you so much Fabrizio–I really appreciate the kind words!
Cool to be able to see it in color & sepia, the journey in time is great with this cow-boy in the city. Have a nice week, dear Christopher.

Thank you so much k@–wishing you a wonderful week as well!
Excellent BW conversion. It really pops the tones of the horse and the guy up.

Great post Christopher! I love that your photograph and caption work so well together, creating a vivid short story. Last but not least… quirky rocks!

Thank you Doug–I really appreciate that! Quirky definitely rocks!
What a great spot – can the police bust you for drinking and riding a horse? processing works well.
Thanks very much–I really appreciate the visit and the comment!

I wondered the same thing about drinking and riding!
This is a great photo and I loved your comments. Keep these coming!

Thank you so much Katie–I appreciate the words of encouragement!

First of all, really, hitching post in the middle of greater LA? This is too excellent for words. Quirky is awesome. As a person who has a fondness for silly socks I must say I love the story about your wife during residency. Fab.

I know huh? Too cool! Thanks Corinna–really appreciate the kind words!
And maybe the cowboys will survive the car drivers?

Those on horseback have very strick right-of-way over cars. As I understand it you have to give the riders a clear path. It’s really an interesting place. Thanks so much PixeLuz!
Great work – congratulations
I really liked the transfer into BW and toning

Thanks very much Andrey–much appreciated!
These places of rural and urban activities, co-existing in one environment, are rare to find these days. I too would have been inspired to try to capture such a scarcity. You did so beautifully! The perfect color tones definitely accentuate the mood.

I live near here but whenever I see it I find the juxtaposition fascinating! Thank you so much Diane!
I love it and the little story. Does she still wear colorful socks??
—
Thank you Sheila! Yes, she still has a wonderfully playful sock collection.
I viewed this last night through my iPad and after seeing your notation about the mouseover decided to wait until this morning. The sepia is perfect for this. Really nice one.

I thought it said…She said they made her “feet” happy amidst the stress of residency… wghich is a novel approach.
Good to see your admiration for eccentricity – start of an interesting project perhaps; a good start if so.
Thanks so much George and yes, a good idea for a project.

Ha! That would be interesting.
Hello Christopher. Apologies in taking so long to visit you blog…work is keeping me way too busy these days.
I like being able to see the raw file, as well as your finished work. Great shot with so many contrasts — like the peaceful and isolated feel of being on horseback, in comparison to the busy life we all lead in our cars.
Thank you so much! I totally understand the work pressures; I’m really glad you were able to stop by and I particularly appreciate the feedback on the comparison feature. Cheers!
That really is quirky. Who would a thought…..:) I like the way the B&W conversion better isolates the horse and rider but I wonder if the color shot, with all the colorful signs, lights, etc. wouldn’t have better accentuated this crazy paradox. Either way it’s a cool post as always.
Love seeing this horse rider in a city scene. And – it’s so cool the way you’ve set it up so that we can see your ‘bef’ore’ and ‘after’!!!
love the mood!
Muy buen tratamiento, parece sacada de una película del Oeste. Buen trabajo!
