Mouseover to see the Original RAW
I am a very lucky guy. I get to walk around with a fancy camera and shoot pictures of any subject that interests me and I have a photoblog wherein I can display my images for all the world to see. I have a family that supports me in my all these photographic endeavors; they’ll even pose for me occasionally. I’m fortunate for all of these reasons but I’m truly lucky for another: if this wonderful, amazing, tiny slice of artistic expression were to be taken from me I’d be terribly disappointed but everything else in my life would be the same. Nobody would go without eating if I couldn’t sell a picture. We wouldn’t lose our home if the economy suddenly made artistic purchases even more discretionary. I’m lucky because I have this wonderful outlet but, to put it bluntly, it doesn’t really matter to anyone.
For millions of genuine artists their reality is far more gritty. If they can’t get a painting sold, an image published or a gig booked they go hungry. In a world that barely supports the arts and even then largely the precious few who make it to superstardom, an artistic passion must be a bittersweet curse indeed. So here’s to each and every one of the gifted souls who make a living filling our lives with a little more music, a touch more beauty and a whole lot more meaning. It really matters.

I’ve fallen behind on visiting all of my favorite photoblogs–life is too busy these days. I look forward to catching up with you all in the next few days!
Cheers!

Great work from Black and White to color and we feel the sound from your pic with this drummer
well done

Thanks so much Noel!
Why do your B&Ws always look so damn good? Love the vibe here. And yes, I agree, sometimes being a dilettante is the way to go.

Credit where credit is due–I owe almost all of it to David Nightingale over at Chromasia. Thanks so much Corinna!
Excellent bw shot!

Thank you very much!
Some days that’s the only thing that make it okay when I shoot for hours and come back with nothing I like enough to post. I like to tell myself it’s all for the love of photography (that’s what I’ll stick with for now.)
This shot reminds me of the many Chicago street festivals to come when the warm weather comes. I can hardly wait. Quick, post some more beach scenes so I’ll have a total escape!

My goodness Michael I can relate. I haven’t had a satisfying day of shooting in several weeks. My last several posts have been sorta recent shots from the archive. I guess this is where I get a taste of what it’s like to grind it out every day. I’ll get that beach shot up right away!
awesome timing and excellent framing with sticks and other elements,,,,,,perfect capture sir.

Thank you very much Ayesha–very kind!
As usual Christopher, your posts are perfectly presented and deeply thoughtful. I can relate to your caption. Since the economy crashed in 2008, my photography sales have dropped considerably. It completely changed the stock business, especially locally. But I keep shooting nevertheless, as I still have a nice core group of customers willing to buy.

Thank you so much Doug–I thought of you and others as I wrote this. It’s been a tough time for everyone but for artists especially. Best of luck!
So true – on so many levels. Thankful – always – for what I have..and for what you have too!

Indeed Marcie–many thanks!

Thank you so much Fabrizio–appreciate the kind words

Thank you very much Sherri!
A great portrait. The concentration is so strong here, focused and into his drumming. I really like this shot.

Thank you so much!

Best to you mon ami
Cool catch !

Thank you very much!
I love the lines in your frame, superb they are along with the portrait. And i agree of course with your words !

Thank you so much k@!
Great the way that the image changes heavy metal to “grooving on a Sunday afternoon” with the addition of the color!
I think that “to put it bluntly, it doesn’t really matter to anyone” should be changed to to put it bluntly, it doesn’t really matter to anyone ELSE”, cos I’m sure that it matters to you.

A great deal George–thanks so much!
Great picture – B&W so much better than colour!

I totally agree with you about the artists. And would add life is hard too for professional photographers who are not necessarily artists…

Thank you very much Michael!
I like the concentration and purposefulness you captured on the drummer’s face. Nicely done. You have some great replies to your comments. Most of us probably understand very well what you are saying. We keep at our photography because we want to…and somehow we “have” to!
—
Thanks Phil–appreciate that!
great job with the post Christopher, you increase the mood and quality of the capture

Thank you very much Klaus–I really appreciate that!

Thank you so much Olaf!
Yes I have that sentiment as well! I have my day job and my hobby and it’s because I am secure and settled that I can just relax and enjoy my love of photography! I am so grateful for all those artists that persist in their love and bring us so much beauty!

So true Sheila! Thanks!
