I’m always amazed by the way my kids can turn anything into a toy. Whether it’s a box that doubles as a spaceship or a tent fashioned from blankets, chairs and pillows, their capacity for joy gleaned from little things is so refreshing. In May of 2009 we visited Monterey, California and spent a good deal of time at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. If you’ve visited, you’ll know there’s more than enough there to capture your attention–it really is a feast for the senses. I was walking around outside the aquarium and looked up at one of the large windows that looks out over the bay. There was a line of kids contorting, spinning and hanging from the rail. It reminded me of a peculiar ballet practice. Here again, kids were doing what kids do…turning something simple into something fun.
