Neither my wife nor I have siblings so it has been an education for us to have two children. Our kids couldn’t be more different from one another. My son is generally unflappable and approaches everything with a level of cool analysis that belies his age. My daughter devours life in huge gulps; be careful not to get caught in the vortex. Often these two forces don’t harmonize and we all suffer. There can be much sobbing during such conflicts…and that’s just Mommy and Daddy.
My son started first grade yesterday so I arranged to be there to pick him up. My intent was to give him an afternoon of fun with Dad, a break from his usual afternoon routine at home. From the moment I suggested he and I do something together and alone the questions about his sister started pouring out. Will she have fun too? Who’s going to take care of her? Will we see her later? What’s she going to do?
You don’t have to hit me over the head. We turned the car around and headed back up the hill to spend a great afternoon with a beaming little girl.
This is one of my favorite recent photos of the kids. I simply told them I wanted to take their picture and my daughter immediately leapt over and grabbed my son in a loving embrace. It turns out that in spite of all evidence to the contrary my kids really love each other. Images like this help me feel that we’re doing something right.
