Photography has been a lifelong education for me. I sometimes have to force myself to think about taking pictures in different ways. This picture was a partial victory. It’s no secret; I love to take pictures of my kids. Sorry about that. I’m always trying to figure out ways to reach that end that don’t feel like I’m forcing everyone to watch a one hour slide show of Junior’s first soccer game. You know what I mean.
In Janurary 2009 we took the kids to the coast for a day and stopped by Fashion Island in Newport Beach. Anyone in the area with kids will tell you it’s a vital stop for one big reason…the bubble fountain. This fountain shoots little blobs of water up out of multiple holes in the ground at random intervals making it an extremely chic version of running through a sprinkler. My kids, like every other, love this water feature. They were playing in the fountain and I was taking plenty of shots of their scampering and caught a few nice pictures of childish glee but nothing popped. I took a break for a while and focused on their feet and was pleasantly surprised by what I got. At the end of the day their feet created a greater feeling of happiness and lightness than the more traditional shots and made the water much more prominent.
I have, however, one significant critique of this shot. I think I should have gotten lower to take it. Still, it’s one of my favorites.
The fountain, by the way, was recently removed to make room for a Nordstrom. Sigh…
