5 Points

There’s a rather storied old intersection near where I work called 5 points.  I’t so named because of a bizarre little road that accesses the intersection obliquely and seems to live outside the rules of normal traffic-light safety.  I’ve known this intersection for 20 years.  The businesses were all family owned including an old-fashioned barber shop, a mattress store and one of good old fashioned TV repair shops you hardly ever see anymore.

Time moves on and one by one the businesses have been bought out by a developer who plans to bring the intersection into this century.  One by one I’ve watched them board up their windows over the last year or so and it fills me with a sense of melancholy.  I know, it’s sentimental and perhaps even a bit cliche but I can’t help it.  This little part of the neighborhood will soon be populated with shiny gas stations and gleaming stores but it will have lost a good deal of its character…and it will be a darn good bit less appealing to photograph.

Nice photo. I know that spot, and a few more like that. Leaves me feeling a little sad. Thanks for this one.

Thanks Daniel–the whole area is either razed or about to be razed.
